By degrees, I was able to find historians who helped me understand what daily life had been like for Hortense at the Institute, the boarding school for girls she attended. There didn’t seem to be very much available on what teen life was like in the past. One challenging problem, however, was the historical research. It doesn’t really matter if the protagonist is 15 or 50. Overall, the process of writing for young adults and writing for adults is exactly the same: that of imaginative immersion in a subject. What was the most challenging aspects of writing for a young adult readership? What did you enjoy the most? Sandra, you are best known for your adult historical novels. THE GAME OF HOPE tells the story of Hortense de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s stepdaughter, and includes vivid depictions of the education, social life, and friendships of young women in Post-Revolutionary France. I was honored to discuss the new young adult novel THE GAME OF HOPE with its talented author, Sandra Gulland.
